Dr. Jia Lin Xie
B. Eco (China), MBA (Concordia, Montreal), PhD (Concordia, Montreal)
Professor of Organizational Behaviour
Magna Professor in Management
Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto, Canada
Dr. Jia Lin Xie joined University of Toronto in 1992. She is a Professor of Organizational Behaviour. Her research focuses on job design, job stress and employee well-being, and cross-cultural organizational behavior.
The primary focus of Jia Lin Xie’s research is on how the fit/misfit between work design and individual characteristics affects job holder’s well-being. Her work on employee stress and well-being is unique in that she has not only established new theories and tested them cross-culturally, but also has gone beyond the focus on the psychological consequences of stress (the most studied consequences). She is a leader in helping the field to recognize and understand the physiological and immunological consequences of stress, such as Immunoglobulin A (IgA), Immunoglobulin G (IgG), stress-related hormone cortisol and blood pressure. Her research demonstrates that these non-self-reported indicators of well-being not only form an extremely important domain of stress consequences, but also offer a valid vehicle for cross-cultural comparative research on employee well-being.
Jia Lin Xie’s research has appeared in Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, Applied Psychology: An International Review, Journal of Behavioral Decision Making, Journal of Management, Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, Journal of Organizational Behavior, International Journal of Human Resource Management and Management and Organization Review, etc. Her research work has been featured widely in the World Medical News, News World of CBC, International Herald Tribune, Radio Canada International, the London Times, USA Today, and National Post, among others. It was also featured in the article titled “OB Research in Canada” in multiple editions of the textbook “Organizational Behaviour” (by J. Colquitt and J. LePine) published by McGrew-Hill.
Jia Lin Xie’s research work has been recognized globally. She received the “Outstanding Paper Award” from the Eastern Academy of Management 2013 Conference and the “Best Paper Award” at the 9th Asia Academy of Management Conference (Organizational Behavior Division) in 2015. Her research has been supported by numerous research grants, including five research grants from Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and three major grants from the General Research Fund (GRF) and Competitive Earmarked Research Grant (CERG) from the Research Grant Council of Hong Kong. She was honored as the “Best Senior Editor” by the journal of Management and Organization Review and was a member of the Editorial Boards of Journal of Organizational Behaviour and Journal of Business Research. In addition, she serves as a reviewer for numerous management journals and grant agencies.
Jia Lin Xie has taught leadership, organizational behaviour, research methodology, cross-cultural management and negotiation at the undergraduate, MBA, Executive Development, Executive MBA, and Ph.D. programs. She has also served as a visiting professor in top business schools in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Europe, and has provided many executive presentations at global organizations. Her MBA students elected her to be the “Most Memorable Professor”. In identifying the qualities that differentiated the most memorable teachers, her MBA student in Class of 2015 said in an article at Poets&Quants on June 18. ...... “I had a wonderful Leadership professor in our first year named Jia Lin Xie. She brought a dynamism, passion, and authenticity to our classroom like I have never seen before from any educator in my entire career….”.
In addition to research and teaching, Dr. Xie has devoted much of her time and effort promoting the internationalization of management knowledge.
